Profile Profile

Barry McGowan made his career in high-tech electronics while spending his free time as a civil rights activist. His educational background includes psychology, comparative religion, and statistics, although he is predominantly self-educated. As a nonreligious person, his focus has been on violations of the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.

Mr. McGowan became involved in the nonreligious civil rights movement in 1990. He first joined a secularist organization with fifty local members; quickly moving into the role of vice president where he was able to advise and instruct others in activism as well. By the end of his second term, the membership had grown to 500 people from all across the nation.

He went on to fund an international award program through the Atheist Alliance International called the Community Cooperation Award and served on its committee. The award is intended to encourage cooperation, ethical awareness, and positive images of the secular community.

Mr. McGowan also created the most popular website on these issues in 2006 at AtheistActivist.org. The high volume of traffic was confirmation that the community was hungry for this type of information and guidance.

In 2008, Barry founded his own nonprofit organization, the Allentown Freethought Society, for which he currently serves as President and Editor of the newsletter, the Allentown Freethought Times. The AFS was able to successfully address a number of issues in the local community that would otherwise have gone unchecked.

Throughout the past twenty years, Mr. McGowan has been dedicated to activism. His work as an adviser to countless other individuals and organizations gives his name recognition in the international nonreligious community. His experience in this specialized field makes him a leading expert on this type of activism today.

Barry McGowan is a native Pennsylvanian born into an Irish Roman Catholic family. Barry and his family continue to make their home in the farmlands of Pennsylvania
